August 6. 2021. | Supreme Court of Thailand | Freedom of expression; right to information | The Supreme Court of Thailand suspended the implementation of a governmental order imposing legal actions on those spreading allegedly false information during the public health emergency. | The Thai Government enacted a decree which envisaged the blocking of internet access and also additional sanctions imposed on those who would spread allegedly false information during the public health emergency. Media service providers and journalists challenged this measure before the Supreme Court, which suspended the implementation of the decree. The government was accused with using the public health emergency to silence oppositional views; while the government argued, that the restrictions were just necessary for combatting the global pandemic. The Supreme Court found that the measure introduced severe limitations on fundamental rights, therefore, the application of the order was blocked. | https://www.reuters.com/world/asia-pacific/thai-court-suspends-government-order-false-messages-2021-08-06/;
