Constitutional Court of Kuwait |
Freedom of expression, Covid and Parliament |
The Constitutional Court of Kuwait expelled an oppositional leader from the Parliament due to spreading unreliable information from the pandemic in the Parliament, as well as citing a former conviction of him based on insulting the late emir. |
The Constitutional Court of Kuwait terminated the parliamentary mandate of an oppositional leader Al-Dahoum, who was known in the country from his fierce criticism against the Government. Al-Dahoum was supposed to spread disinformation from the Covid-19 pandemic and from the protective measures in the Parliament; moreover, an older conviction of him was also mentioned in the decision, which was based on an alleged insult of a member of the royal family, who become later the emir of Kuwait. This conviction was previously annulled by the High Appellate Court of Kuwait, and Al Dahoum was permitted to take part in the parliamentary elections as a candidate, however, the Constitutional Court later excluded him from the legislative body. Moreover, during the publication of this judgment, parliamentary sittings were adjourned by the emir with one month. |
